Living Stingy.Blogspot.com and the Newton, CT Massacre

I don't know how I ran across this Living Stingy blog, but once I did I found my self reading it for 2 or 3 hours on end.

The blogs author is a man who is a patent attorney, his name is Robert Platt Bell.

He writes in a manner that is very interesting, very transparent, very down to earth and real, with the combined effect that you know he is a very educated man.

His writing and rationality kind of reminds me of Robert Ringer, who is the author of Looking Out For #1 and also Winning Through Intimidation, amongst many other books.

The more you read of Robert Platt Bell's writing, the more you want to read.  It is kind of like he is a very philosophical person and he feels the need or desire to share his personal perspective on things with you, me, the reader.

His blog has no ads on it, hence apparently writing in exchange for payment is not his motivation.  My perception is that he writes because he likes to and perhaps similar to me, for the supreme desire as an expression of our first amendment freedom of speech that we are honored to have in the US of A..

He shares his opinion as to why it is always best to bite the bullet and exclusively buy NEW tires, as opposed to used or retreads.

I have a differing opinion than him on this and I will tell you why.  My vehicles use 16" tires.  New tires for my vehicle start at $100 per tire, and that is a low end price and does not include installation, taxes etc etc.

Long story short, 5 or so years back, a company that deals with fleet maintenance, had installed new ties on hundreds of vehicles as a part of routine maintenance and most of the tires removed from these vehicles had good tread on them.  They placed an ad selling these tires for $15 each.  I went and took a look at them.  They were stored in a warehouse and there were a few hundred of them.

I made an offer to the guy.  I said I will buy 20 of them from you, if you will sell me those 20 for $10 each.  He agreed.  I loaded up my vehicle with 20 of these used tires and paid the man $200 cash.  Now, 5 years has drifted by.  I have used 9 or 10 of these tires on my two vehicles.  I still have about 10 of the tires left.  That gave me 5 good years of driving time / tire wear and I still have half the amount of tires left to use.  A very good $200 investment in my opinion.

Keeping in mind that some times I needed to replace a tire due to inadvertently cutting the side wall when scraping against a curb while doing a U turn.  It is much nicer to ruin a $10 tire than it is a new $100+ tire.  I do think used tires can be a bargain if you buy them cheap enough.  Especially when new ones are $100 each or more.

I will be reading much more of Robert's blog in the near future.  Here is the link to it for you to enjoy also. >>> http://livingstingy.blogspot.com/

All that is on the news today is this massacre that just happened in Newton, Connecticut.  Adam Lanza, a 20 year old, murdered his mother and then shot and killed 20 children ages 5 to 7 and  six adults, school teachers etc.

A very sad occasion and as President Obama says, these incidents are happening more and more lately.  A sign of the times.  A sign that the world is a troubled place.  WTC 9 - 11, many other incidents of murder and mayhem.  The older God allows you to live, the more bad shit you get to see and experience.

I turned the channel to the Weather Channel, to watch some thing else other than murder and mayhem.  Why?  Not because I do not have empathy and sadness for those murdered, but because there is so much bad in the world that I do not want to spend all of my waking hours absorbed in it.

There is no good reason for most of the atrocities of life.  It may be you or me next.  But even then, life goes on.  The middle east seems to have perpetual war.  There is extreme hatred in the world.  Many war heroes come home and commit suicide.  Life is not always a happy place.

The answer?  Try to find peace and happiness in your life on a daily basis and keep moving forward.

In my opinion, you and I are simply lucky that we happened to not be in the WTC on 9 - 11 or the victim of some weird murder event such as innocently watching a movie in a dark theater and being shot up with gun fire.  We may be next!  Enjoy life today and tomorrow, cause we don't know when we might be the next victim / statistic.
